Characterization of the thermal, physical and adhesive properties of high density polyethylene/Elvaloy® blends were performed in this study. Elvaloy is an ethylene terpolymer containing epoxy functional groups based on a glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) component. The GMA easily adheres to both steel and polymers; however, does not have the necessary strength to be implemented independently. The goal of this work was to blend HDPE with Elvaloy and characterize changes in strength, melting temperature, crystallinity and adhesion to steel. The incorporation of Elvaloy to HDPE was found to lower tensile strength and crystallinity of HDPE while increasing strain-to-failure. The proposed system may be implemented as a protective coating for steel at low Elvaloy loading (25-33 wt%). These compositions showed the greatest adhesive performance along with high tensile strength and strain-to-failure.
