Drainage networks are significant sources of noise pollution in apartment housing due to the injection of air as a consequence of water discharges from installed appliances. Irrespective of the two-phase flow irregularities, some patterns have been established, where one of the most persistent is the so-called slug flow. The fluid fluctuations can be considered as the internal generation mechanism which gives rise to the vibrations, such that vertical pipes can be seen as a structure-borne sound source with the ability to transmit power into attached passive structures and impart power to fluid environments perceived as audible noise.
