Corrosion of Radioactive Waste Drum Materials by Various Thiobacillus Strains

This study explores how various Thiobacillus strains influence the corrosion of radioactive waste drum materials and the migration of corroded products. Five strains of Thiobacillus spp. and two radioactive waste drum materials, the cold-rolled carbon steel (C-RCS) and hot-rolled carbon steel (H-RCS), were used. The physiological properties and the morphology of the tested Thiobacillus strains were investigated. The effects of Thiobacillus strains on the corrosion of carbon steel drum materials and the migration of corroded products were examined by measurements of weight loss, electrochemical analysis, and inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry. Under microscopic observation, numerous bacteria were present in corroded products and the migration of the corroded products was accelerated by Thiobacillus strains. Results indicated that Thiobacillus strains increased the electrochemical parameters. For the same bacteria, the icorr of H-RCS exceeded that of C-RCS. Of the five tested strains, T. thiooxidans had the greatest effect on the migration of corroded products of RCS; T. thioparus was the weakest. The weight loss of RCS in the T. ferrooxidans culture exceeded that in the T. thiooxidans culture. Conclusively, the Thiobacillus strains promoted the corrosion of radioactive waste drum materials.
