A ceramic matrix composite (CMC) system, designated as NUSK-CMC has been developed by NAL, Ube Industries Ltd., Shikibo Ltd., and Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. using Si-Ti-C-O (Tyranno~R) fiber, 3-D fabrics reinforcement, PIP matrix and glass seal technologies. By cooperation of these four sectors, static strength level has been upgraded to 380 MPa in high temperature air up to 1200°C in this decade. A research and development program was planned for establishing application technology of CMC to space vehicle components and a chosen component was a combustion chamberozzle of an experimental thruster. Brief overview of R & D program is given here as well as lessons learned by this activity.
