As traffic on the core of networks becomes increasingly data centric, network design and development must continue to evolve to support not only the traffic types but also the volume of these applications. The implementation of Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM) over the last several years by core providers has provided an adequate infrastructure for the early stages of the data revolution. This transport technology is now being implemented into the local markets, which will relieve large bottlenecks, allowing another flood of bandwidth onto network cores. Current core architectures will have difficultly efficiently scaling to meet the needs of projected traffic demands. This paper will address some observations concerning the direction of optical network designs intended to meet these needs.
