Recent advances in ATM for the support of IP traffic

Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) is employed in a variety of ways today, one of the most important of which is in support of networks based on the Internet Protocol (IP). This paper describes two recent advances in ATM Traffic Management that allow ATM to provide more effective service to IP networks. This first is the new Guaranteed Frame Rate (GFR) service category for interconnecting IP routers. The second is an extension to the Unspecified Bit Rate (UBR) service category to support relative service as envisioned in IP Differentiated Services. In each case we provide motivation for the new ATM capability, describe its definition in the ATM standard, and discuss implementation issues.
