Carrier-class transport service providers have been developing and depending on SONET-based transmission equipment for over 10 years. The long-haul telecommunications industry is growing exponentially not only in estimated revenue, but also in actual physical expansion by leaps and bounds. Most of the installed network circuit design, bandwidth protection and traffic management schemes are all currently based on a SONET infrastructure and/or that utilize Frame Relay / ATM or transporder-based wave services for capacity grooming and protection switching schemes. Those companies with installed DWDM networks are currently limited to either current amplifier / transmitter / receiver technology for distance or the number of wavelengths that may optically be deployed before signal degradation. Williams Communications is pushing toward Ultra-Long Haul systems utilizing pure Raman amplification to provide a future option for growth and operational efficiency, and will be the cornerstone to future Transparent Optical Network.
