A growing number of data providers are now moving from leasing bandwidth to owning and operating their own optical backbones. Although these networks are built with the same equipment and routes as traditional carriers, they have very different requirements, and unique considerations. These requirements have led to many new network design techniques in order to optimize the optical backbone for a data network. One of the first data providers to make the decision to build a nationwide optical backbone was Splitrock. Their unique requirements and application has led to innovations in network design, and many new network considerations. This paper wil discuss these requirements and the effect these have on the network design.
