In general, the definition of what is a defect in a carbon fiber or nanotubes was discussed without a clear conclusion. It was decided that the application of the nanotube or fiber will dictate what should be regarded as a defect. For electrical applications of nanotubes, defects drastically alter the characteristics. For the case of VGCF composite mechanical properties, G.Tibbetts pointed out that a highly graphitized fiber might have been expected to give better tensile strength, yet the opposite was observe.
