The accelerated action to remove the depleted uranium chips and associated soils and wastes was conducted in the summer of 1998 at the Rocky Flats Environmental Technology Site at Trench 1. Extensive and rigorous planning, which included following the principles of the Integrated Safety Management System and enhanced work planning, was carried out to ensure that the remedial action was conducted safely. This approached relied predominantly on the involvement of workers, technical support groups and the project staff. Feedback throughout he project and incorporation of lessons learned were also essential in resolving issues in an effective and efficient manner. Because of the high levels of volatile organic compounds and polychorinated byphenyls found in the drums of depleted uranium wastes, the material could not be shipped to the treatment subcontractor for recycling as originally planned.
