A method was proposed for estimating the distributions of eigen-strains in solids. In the method the eigen-strains were decomposed into incompatible and compatible components. The incompatible components give rise to residual stresses as well as deformation, while the compatible components given rise to deformation only. Based on this idea eigen-strains distributions can be estimated from displacements and residual stresses measured at meaurement points. The isotropy or incompressibility of the eigen-strains was used to improve the estimation. Numerical simulations were made of the estimation of the eigen-strain distributions in a two-dimensional body. It was found that the distributions of eigen-strains can be estimated from the observations of displacements and residual stresses by using the proposed method.
