The initiation of single crystals of ADN (ammonium dinitramide), AP (ammonium perchlorate), HMX (cyclotetramethylene tetranitramine), RDX (cyclotrimethylene trinitramine) has been recorded/followed from the formation of microscopic " reaction sites" prior to the "hot spot" formation to the development of "hot spots" leading to full crystal deflagration. The detonation of granular HMX, fllowing deflagration, has been studied in a laser detonator. The experimental results/observations have given information leading to a fuller understanding of the microscopic mechanisms involved in the initiation, deflagration and detonation processes in energetic materials.
