Automatic key-section recognition is approached by a two-stepprocedure. The first step is a screening based on arc/straight-segmentclassification, which associates to each key section a morphologicalpattern. The second step measures the string distances by means ofnonlinear elastic matching among the key-sections possessing the samemorphological description. Arc/straight-segment classification, atypical geometrical form description problem, is studied by twotechniques, one based on Euclidean geometry notions and the other basedon discrete geometry. The results achieved by the second techniqueappear superior. The performance of the recognition procedure onkey-section databases of practical significance are very satisfactory
