If an object possesses, in fact, irrisistable strain before breaking, then this breaking is called brittle failure. This happens when energy is absorbed to the smallest amount and the propagation of the breaking is nearly at the speed of sound. Rocks are such kind of brittle materials. It has been proved by experiments that the compressive strength of rocks is the largest, then their shear strength and their tensile strength, the smallest, as is shown in Table 1.
