The integration of voice and data onto single highspeed transport facility is providing private network users significant economic benefit when utilizing a 1544 Mbps DS-1 communications facility.During the past 20 years,the telcos employed 1.544 Mbpe tranamiagion for time division multiplexed digital voice frsquence telephone conversations over standard twisted-pair telco cable.In 1983,AT&T-C introduced Terrestrial Digital Service (TDS) for customer premises to peemises digital signal transmission over a 1.544 Mbipe telco circuit.Corporate communications managers immediately identified economic savings as T1 tariff applications were filed by the inter-exchange and local-exchange carriers.AT&T-C is offering T1 as the vanguard for a new family of highspeed digital communications services which will integrate telephony and data communications over a universal integrated data transport.Integrated Serviced Digital Network (ISDN) will offer providers and users access and service integration,network functionality and user control of network service features.The ISDN Primary Rate Interface (PRI),as defined by AT&T-C and the CCITT,utilises the 1.544 Mbps transmission rate.The sudden popularity for 1.544 Mbpe transmission services has created significant opportunities for hardware equipment manufactorers who can supply T1 CPE termination products.The revenues from hardware sales has grown from $30 million in 1983 to an estimsted $292 million in 1986.The revenue forecast through 1990 is estimated to exceed $750 million for T1 products.During the past three years,the number of companies offering T1 products hasgrown from I0 to more than 50.
