Since the beginnings of the telephone industry,operational costs have been kept at bay by a combination of some automation and increased customer control.To date this has been primarily in the area of normal telephone call control,but now this trend can be continued in the area of network control and administration.This paper examines some opportunities in Centrex service and special services and shows that the techniques and the products are becoming available,specifically Network Operations Systems. Via these techniques and systems,the telephone company can achieve benefits in the areas of reduced operational costs and increased customer control,that are as highly sought after by the customers as was direct dialling.
