A fiber optic local area packet communication system, for an office system, has been developed, which consists of 10 Megabits per second fiber optic CSMA/CD subnetworks and a 32 Megabits per second Token ring backbone network. Up to 64 fiber optic CSMA/CD subnetworks are interconnected with the Token ring backbone network by means of a bridge over 128 km. The fiber optic CSMA/CD subnetwork can support up to 1024 FOMAU's and network diameter of 3 km by means of 33- port passive star couplers, Fiber Optic Medium Attachment Units (FOMAU's) compatible with ISO 8802/3 Attachment Unit Interface(AUI) and Fiber Optic Repeater Units(FORU's). This paper describes the implementation and characteristics of the fiber optic equipments of the CSMA/CD subnetwork and the Token ring backbone network.
