Yes, there is a chance for adventure within the many disciplines of oceanography. I have been associated with the field for 15 years and have certainly had my share! Why is it, then, that a great majority of ocean science graduates, especially those in the biological concentrations, do not seriously pursue a science career after graduation? I believe that the lack of employment opportunities coupled with the discovery that marine biology is not all submersibles and scuba diving have a great deal to do with this problem. I also believe that the a partial solution involves pre-college hands-on experience in field and laboratory situations and in exposure to the nation's science-oriented service, the NOAA Commissioned Corps.
