THE INTRODUCTION OF BROADBAND COMMUNICATIONS IN THE FEDRAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY

In the Federal Republic of Germany the Deutsche Bundespost (DBP) is basically responsible for the installation and extension of an efficient and modern telecommunication infrastructure. This responsibility covers not only the field of individual communication networks such as the telephone and telex networks, but also the field of mass communication networks for television distribution services and cable television.This comprehensive responsibility enables the DBP to think about the further development of telecommunication networks taking all telecommunication services-I.e. The services known today as well as those which can be conceived for the future-into account. As a consequence, special emphasis is being given to the service-integrated networks such as are currently being discussed for the narrowband services under the heading of ISDN so intensively throughout the world. For economic reasons the introduction of broadband services should continue and extend the ISDN approach, I.e. The integration of different services in a common telecommunication network; in this connection special importance is attached to optical fibre technology in the local network.
