The problem of calculating )is reduced to that of solving a set of simultaneous ordinary differential equations subject to the initial condition embodied in equation (24). This may be done using the numerical way of Risken and Vollmer developed for the translational problem. The advantages of this method (of reduction to ordinary differential equations) over any other is that it gives good results for any values of the parameters S.I etc so that both resonance and relaxation behaviour of the system can be predicted. Before concluding we remark one solitary situation where an exact analytical solution of the set of equations (20) may be obtained, namely the case of the free rotator where V = 0 The n dependence now vanishes and the equations reduce to equation
