Contending With Marine Biofouling Evaluation Of Antifoulant Materials June 1978 Through November 1982

Eleven reported antifoulant materials were tested during a 53 month field evaluation conducted at Hutchinson Island, Florida. The materials tested were copper; 90:10 copper-nickel; 85:15 copper-nickel; aluminum bronze; three experimental copper flake-epoxy resin formulations; NOFOUL; Schlegel Sheet; and two tributyl tin monomer fiberglas laminates. Test panels of these materials and untreated concrete (controls) were submerged in the sea water intake canal of the St Lucie Generating Station for various durations, eg, 91, 183, 273, 364, 520, 727, 1097, 1345, 1524, 1614 days. Of the materials tested, copper and NOFOUL performed best as antifoulants. The other materials failed to various degrees. Weight losses were noted for the copper alloy test panels.
