The increased concentration on water conservation and reclamation has given rise, to investigations of various sources of stream pollution and at the same time it has given impetus to measurements that will enable production of even cleaner water for use in industry. An electronic instrument designated as the Coulter Counter? has been applied in both areas of investigation. In operation, an electric current path of small dimensions is modulated by the passage of individual particles. Essentially, a two-chamber system is used with an electrode on both sides of an orifice connecting the two chambers. The particles suspended in a conducting medium are drawn through the orifice. Voltage pulses are produced which are representative of the volume of the particle.
