Physico-Chemical Aspects of Wastewater Disinfection with Ozone and Ultraviolet Irradiation

As a result of the recent adoption by the European Community of Directives relating to the quality of bathing waters and urban wastewater treatment, the disinfection fo waste effluents prior to discharge is generating substantial interest as a possible means of achieving compliant microbiological water qualities. However, many concerns still remain over the increased use of disinfectants, not least with respect to the deleterious impacts that disinfection techniques may have on treated effluents or receivign waters. As a consequence, this paper summarises the knowledge currently available on the two most commonly employed wastewater disinfectants, ultra-violet irradiation and ozoen, relating to the effects they have on the physico-chemcial characteristics of effluents and attempts to address the implications to the practice and future adoption of these two disinfection processes.
