Environmental legislations have been enacted in India during the last two decades or so with a view to protect the environment and ensuring its continued sustainability. The present paper highlights synoptically the salient features of the different laws in force in India for protection of encvironment and ecology in pre-independence and post independence era including important laws related to mineral industry. It also deals with important federal USA laws for comparison. The inadequacies of environmental laws in India vis-a-vis the USA laws are presented.
