Management of coal combustion products in Illinois underground mines: An overview

Under a U.S.Department of Energy cooperative research program, a hydraulic and a pnewmatic placement systems have been developed for underground placement of both the coal combustion products (CCPs) and the flue gas desulfurization (FGD) products. In addition, two new transportation systems were developed to transport the products from the power plant to the mine site or other utilization points. These systems are 1 ) Collapsible Intermodal Container (CIC) and 2) Steel Intermodal Container (SIC). In the summer of 1997, using the developed placement systems, approximately 8,500 tons of high-solid CCP-based pastes and 3,000 tons of FBC fly ash were injected into the old panels of an abandoned cal mine in central Illinois. In this paper, an overview of the research program and economic evaluations of the transportation and hydraulic placement systems are presented.
