Magnetic incremental permeability (MIP) method practiced as a NDT technique is based on eddy current testing in addition to a local magnetic yoke magnetization. To clarify the mechanism of MIP and to find optimal probe design, a numerical method for simulating magnetic incremental permeability profile is developed for ferromagnetic material based on the simulated polarization algorithm and the reduced vector potential method. Experiments are also conducted for test-pieces of carbon steel with different residual strains, which validated the proposed numerical scheme.
