Maximizing the Integration of Distributed Generation in Smart Grids Distribution Systems

This paper investigates the paths proposed by the European Electricity Grid Initiative (EEGI) towards a more sustainable energy system, changing the distribution system operation paradigm by introducing new practices and tools on network operation, planning, and regulation towards a greater involvement of network users. It is based on the new FP7 SuSTAINABLE Project, which aims at analyzing the development and demonstration of a new operation paradigm, promoting local control strategies, leveraging information from smart meters, short-term localized forecasts of RES and consumption in order to manage distribution systems in a more efficient and cost-effective way, thus enabling a largescale deployment of intermittent renewable-based Distributed Generation. Discussion includes the definition of the SuSTAINABLE concept and the most appropriate management and control system architecture, as well as, the advanced smart grids functionalities that will be developed and implemented, such as, load and renewable generation forecasting tools, grid monitoring and state estimation and coordinated voltage support. A set of distributed information collected from several active players connected to the distribution network will be exploited, with some of this information pre-processed locally, using a cloud like computing principle, whereby shared resources, software and information are provided to the control solution using a common communication infrastructure also used for metering purposes, allowing to, ultimately, maximize the integration of DG in the Smart Grid through this new distribution system operation paradigm.
