The growing concern on global warming coupled with the fast-growing of carbon developmentrnmechanism (CDM) projects for the sake of reducing emissions of greenhouse gases have expedited the installationrnof pollution-reduction technology by purchasing carbon emission reductions (CER) credits from the rich carbonrnmarket in developing countries in Asia. To prevent the environmental pollution such as algae blooms andrngroundwater contamination, geosynthetic liners are widely used particularly owing to its cost-effectiveness andrnmore secure containment. Among the plastic materials utilized for geosynthetics liners purposes, HDPErngeomembrane is the most widely adopted geosynthetic liners for various containments and environmentalrnengineering applications, include sanitary waste landfill and liquid containment system, etc. Today, HDPErngeomembranes are gaining widespread popularity as a sealing system in cover and bottom liner system ofrnwastewater facilities, anaerobic/aerobic treatment ponds and evaporation ponds in animal waste facilities. With itsrnwater-tightness and outstanding performance in many aspects, HDPE geomembrane is a suitable material thatrnmeeting the Kyoto-driven greenhouse gas emission restrictions and/or for Carbon Trading. The paper summarizesrnthe experiences in Thailand that installed floating covers on waste lagoons to achieve benefits of using HDPErngeomembrane for biogas collection and recovery, energy production, odor control, protection against evaporationrnand contamination of groundwater. This paper presents the characteristics of HDPE White geomembrane, floatingrncover design and installation concerns inclusive of two successfully case histories on HDPE geomembrane floatingrncover system for anaerobic lagoons that enable methane gas collection for an alternative electric power generations.
