New consumer formats such as DVD are pushing the performance of audio D/A converters to higher and higher levels. In both consumer and professional worlds, dynamic ranges in excess of 115 dB are desired, along with excellent low-level linearity and freedom from idle tones. In addition, higher sampling rates are now being proposed, and thus new D/A converter designs must be able to accept input signals at rates as high as 192KHz. The DVD audio-only spec suggests that during 6-channel playback, one may encounter a mix of sample rates at 48KHz, 96KHz and 192KHz simultaneously on the same program material. All of these requirements demand a new generation of DAC designs.
