The effects of instabilities of sampling on spectra estimation are studied in the case of linear FM signals by means of the pseudo-discrete Wigner-Ville distribution (PDWVD). We show that the PDWVD allows one to extract the instantaneous frequency of the randomly sampled signal. The effects of random and non-uniform sampling are studied. Two sampling methods are analysed: an independent uniform jitter and a determinist accumulated sampling. The effects of the sampling instabilities are given in an analytic form, in terms of the frequency accuracy of the instantaneous frequency (IF) and in terms of the increase of the sidelobe level.
