Modem protocols for the analog cellular data collection systems

The explosion of wireless technology, especially cellular telephony, has greatly enhanced communication and data transfer over wide geographic areas. Initially, analog technology for the transfer of information (voice/data) had been the driving force. But now, digital technology appears to be the driving force in wireless communication. Although digital technology is growing by leaps and bounds and looks to be the better technology in many ways, analog technology is still used to transfer or gather information remotely. The reason for this is that analog technology is more widespread (covers a larger geographic area) than digital technology. Also, digital telephony is often optimized for voice communication and lacks the ability to be easily used in remote data collection. Therefore, analog technology will likely be relied on for years to come and utilized for remote data collection and other applications. With that in mind, the paper discusses analog cellular modem (modulator-demodulator) protocols that are required to efficiently gather or transfer information over analog cellular connections.
