We consider a "pragmatic" coded QAM single-carrier modulation choice, with frequency-domain equalization, for the uplink of future broadband wireless communication systems. The paper presents and discusses a set of performance results concerning the proposed schemes within a broadband system operating at 40 GHz. For the sake of comparisons, the paper includes results for coded QAM multicarrier modulation schemes with the same spectral efficiencies, also relying on the same 64-state, rate-1/2 convolutional code. The overall advantage of the single-carrier choice is emphasized.
