W-CDMA, selected as the access technique for the third generation system, has many advanced algorithms for high performance. Tight and fast power control is one of the most important aspects of W-CDMA, in particular on the uplink. We propose a new adaptive step-size closed loop power control scheme. The proposed scheme selects the power control step size based on mobile speed and the variable step size is decided by using instantaneous companding logic based on power control command bit patterns. We compare the proposed scheme with the previous adaptive step-size closed loop power control scheme. We show the performance improvement of the proposed scheme in terms of the standard deviation of the received power at the base station and average transmitted power at the mobile station.
