The paper describes a method allowing 3D simulation of single phase a.c. electromagnets fed by voltage sources. Since the harmonic current in the exciting coil depend on air-gap width, the m.m.f in the windings has to be taken into account. A computational method based on finite elements was developed to obtain the static attractive force characteristics of a.c. electro-magnets for circuit breakers. This method uses nodal finite elements and loop equations of the electric circuit. Both, magnetic field and electric circuit equations are solved simulaneously in the frequency domain. Computation results are compared to measurements of a 9Amps circuit breaker.
