Using anatomy of Musca domestica's (the housefly) first optic ganglion, the lamina ganglionaris, a biologically inspired artificial neural network is presented. This paper focuses on communication phenomena and activity between specific neurons in the lamina and models nonsynaptic communication between neurons. Test results demonstrate that nonsynaptic communication between neurons can achieve results similar to synaptic connections in early vision systems.
