Samsung Mulls $1.5bn Philippines Investment

Samsung electronics is close to finalising plans to invest US$1.5bn in a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility at Clark Freeport, a former US air base 80km from Manila in the Philippines. According to Clark Development Corp (CDC) president Liberato P Laus, construction should start early next year if there are no hiccups, with production scheduled for the third quarter of 2010. Laus declined to reveal details of what the plant would produce but indicated that it could be a high-end facility. It will be Samsung's second manufacturing facility in the Philippines. Samsung Electronics Philippines Manufacturing Corp produces optical disk drives at the Calamba Industrial Park in Laguna, 47km from Manila.
