In this paper, we investigate joint cooperationdiversity and symbol mapping diversity strategies forcooperative communication systems that employ nonbinarylinear modulations such as phase-shift keying (PSK) andquadrature amplitude modulation (QAM). Substantial symbolerror rate gains results from designing different symbolmappings for each packet transmission (symbol mappingdiversity) and delivering them through independent paths tothe final destination (cooperation diversity). These jointdiversity schemes can provide substantial symbol error rategains with only a small increase in receiver complexity andcombat the effects of fading induced by multipath propagationeffectively.
