IMO'S STRATEGY FOR THE IMPLEMENTATIONOF THE OPRC CONVENTION

The International Convention on Oil Pollution Preparedness, Response and Cooperation(OPRC) will enter into force May 13, 1995, less than five years after its adoption by aglobal diplomatic conference convened by the International Maritime Organization inDecember 1990. However, since then IMO has actively pursued a strategy forimplementing the OPRC Convention in close cooperation with interested governmentsand industry. The primary objective of this strategy is to enhance the capacity ofcountries to effectively carry out the requirements of the convention and strengthenIMO's ability to assist countries in this process. The strategy is realized by action taken byIMO's OPRC standing working group, in which government and industry expertsparticipate, and by IMO staff, experts, and consultants as part of a technical cooperationprogram for the protection of the marine environment.
