Analysis and average value model of a source-commutated 5-phase rectifier

The steady-state behaviors of a 5-phase diode rectifier system connected to both an inductive voltage source and a synchronous machine have been investigated. For the voltage source/rectifier system, research has been performed in hardware and simulation, starting with a light load and ending with a short circuit on the DC bus. Seven modes of operation have been identified. Analytical average value models relating output current and voltage have been derived for each mode. Comparisons are made to 3-phase systems of identical volume. For the machine/rectifier system, a different regulation characteristic has been observed, due to the effect of mutual inductances between phase windings. Operation modes are shown to be the same as those of the voltage source/rectifier system. Analytical average-value models for two modes of operation have been established, and agree well with detailed simulation results.
