The cultures of blood mononuclear cells from healthy donors (HD) and from patients with chronic virus B hepatitis (HV) reacts differentially to pulse modulated exposure with 1300 MHz microwaves. The same absorbed dose of 1 mW/cm/sup 2/ reduced response of HD lymphocytes and significantly increased response of HV lymphocytes to PHA. The exposure strongly stimulated the production of interferon gamma (IFN/spl gamma/) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF/spl alpha/) in the cultures of HV lymphocytes but not in the cultures of HD cells. The results suggest that microwave irradiation may stimulate the effector immune response in patients with chronic virus B hepatitis.
