A computer science research outcome from theoretical work on public transport information systems has led to the discovery of a novel technique for the handling of spatial co-ordinate data over the Internet. The approach handles many standard geographic systems functions such as mapping, routing and spatial searches but replaces the GIS server application with small "one-hit" CGI programs or scripts acting on pre-processed cartographic data. The techniques used have much in common with the recording and playing back of music, in that a very large data set can be serialised. Just as you cannot hear the whole of a piece of music at once, you cannot be everywhere at once. The detailed object model of CgiMapScript is the subject of a paper in preparation. This is essentially a philosophical paper in which the core logic is fully explicated in argument.
