Atmospheric aerosols scatter and absorb solar and terrestrial radiation. These aerosol optical properties affect the solar radiation budget and the ability to see through the atmosphere. In order to model these effects the aerosol phase function, single scatter albedo and optical depth are needed at a range of wavelengths. Satellites are the logical choice to measure these aerosol optical properties but algorithms are often poorly constrained and careful validation efforts are needed.
