Implementation of the signaling protocol for the prototype IMT-2000 ATM exchange

This paper describes the signaling protocol implemented in our prototype ATM-based IMT-2000 exchange (A-IMX). It also presents a demonstration of the mobile service using a simulator, which performs both roles of the mobile station and the base station. After a brief overview of the signaling protocol stack and the basic mobile functions implemented in both the A-IMX and the simulator, the paper outlines the signaling procedures between the A-IMX and the simulator. The feasibility of mobile function of the A-IMX is validated by the mobile service demonstration through our simulator. The signaling protocol stack based on digital subscriber signaling system 2 (DSS2) for B-ISDN is used for the IMT-2000 A-interface between the A-IMX and the simulator. We propose a signaling protocol for the interface of the IMT-2000 reference model between a radio access network (RAN) and a core network (CN), which can be regarded as an easy way to develop the ATM mobile switching system and the simulator.
