The importance of the interconnections in measurement work should never be under estimated and the choice of or the replacement of a connector may enable the random uncertainty contribution in a measurement process to be reduced significantly. Careful consideration must be given, when choosing a connector, to select the correct connector for the measurement task. In modern measuring instruments, such as power meters, spectrum analyzers and signal generators the coaxial connector socket on the front panel is often an integral part of a complex subassembly and any damage to this connector may result in a very expensive repair. It is particularly important when using coaxial cables, with connectors which are locally fitted or repaired, that they are tested before use to ensure that the connector complies with the relevant mechanical specification limits. Even new cables, which are obtained from specialist manufacturers, should be tested before use. Any connector which does not pass the relevant mechanical tests should be rejected and replaced.
