This article explores the use of nonlinear output feedback control schemes as power system stabilizers (PSS). We apply five different control schemes to a single generator-infinite bus power system in order to compare their behavior. Specifically, we are interested in the controllers' ability to handle disturbances (model inaccuracies, measurement noise, etc.). The control methods used are fuzzy control, sliding mode control, two Lyapunov-based robust control methods and a standard linear PSS. It is found that the linear robust and fuzzy controllers had the best overall behavior.
