This paper describes some of the test facilities that have been built for the purpose of testing controllers of high power electronic apparatus used in power transmission and which could also be used for similar equipment in industrial applications. The need for such elaborate testing arises from the ever growing complexity of the controls and the increase in power ratings, both of which lead inevitably to a greater sensitivity to onsite testing. An important consideration in this context is the reaction of the system in which the apparatus is connected, that is, testing in closed loop configuration. The paper describes some of the elements required for appropriate testing.
