Scattering of a plane electromagnetic wave from a multilayered sphere with an eccentric inclusion is studied through an indirect mode matching (IMM) technique. The resulting exact solution is used to determine the microwave signature of the inclusion at the surface of the layered spherical structure. To this end the authors define and use the surface correlation of the magnetic field intensity. They apply the theory to a six-layered sphere with a tiny inclusion, which may serve as model of a human head with a tumor. The numerical investigation is focussed on the possibility of detecting the tumor through surface field measurements. The results indicate that useful information about the location of the tumor can be extracted from the surface correlation of the radial component of the magnetic field intensity.
