Photovoltaic power generation systems (PV) require a battery for night and rainy day operation. A redox flow battery has advantages over Pb-acid designs for this application with respect to the capability of deep discharge and needlessness of equalized charge. The authors have developed a high performance vanadium redox flow battery for this purpose and an inexpensive production technology for its electrolyte, which forms the majority of the battery cost, by using chemical reduction from boiler plant by-products. A 2 kW (10 kWh) battery, the minimum unit for practical battery size (50 kW/spl times/50 h), achieved 1.2 kW/cm/sup 2/-electrode area at the 100 mA/cm/sup 2/ current density.
