Fiber access-how many solutions, how many players?

Telephone local-exchange carriers and cable television operators are each installing fiber close to residential customers to improve their service quality and operations. Telephone carriers have tested "fiber to the home" (FTTH) access networks, but are currently installing either "fiber to the curb"" (FTTC) or "fiber to the serving area" (FSA). FTTC brings fiber to nodes of from 4 to 96 living units, with copper pair and coax delivering signals over the last few hundred feet beyond the fiber termination. Digital video transport is easily added to FTTC or FTTH, and analog transport can be added at nominal cost. Analog video transport is inherent to FSA, and digital video as well as two-way voice service is easily added using RF modems that modulate these services into conventional 6 MHz cable channels.
