Pathways to engineering practice-chartered engineer

With 130000 members, the IEE has the largest membership of all the Engineering Institutions in the UK. With 60000 Corporate Members, it can be assumed that more than half of the IEE Membership are in the process of gaining, or aspiring towards, Chartered status. They will do so via the following route: an IEE-accredited BEng engineering degree, at a minimum of second class honours, or equivalent; an IEE-accredited training scheme of at least two years' duration, or equivalent; and at least two years of 'responsible experience'. In addition, applicants are required to undertake a professional review which includes an informal interview of about 45 minutes' duration. This formation process is identified as being appropriate to instill the creative and innovative attributes required of a Chartered Engineer whilst providing the knowledge and understanding of the fundamental principles and analytical skills necessary to solve new engineering problems.
